Graham Cracker Crust

Geeeee…it’s been awhile since I posted anything in my Tips & Trick Section of the blog!

Yesterday it occurred to me that I should post a how to on “how to make a graham cracker crust”.  This blog started as a future tutorial for my girls and boy should they decide to need a recipe now (or in the future) and I know they have no idea how to make a graham cracker crust!

Yesterday when they were eating a slice of my Lemon Icebox Pie…two of them commented…”Mom, the crust is really good!”

The crust?!!   What about the scrumptious lemon custard filling?!!

Anyway, here is the easy way to make a graham cracker crust.  This recipe fits a deep dish pie dish and makes quite a thick crust.  Making a regular pie? Halve the recipe!  Have some leftover? Put it in a freezer bag for next time!  It freezes well!

Okay, so assuming you do have a food processor…start by putting two sleeves of graham crackers into your food processor bowl.

If you don’t have a food processory, you can do like we used to do at my mom’s before we had a food processor.  Put them on a cutting board and use your rolling pin to gently roll and smash them into fine crumbs…or put them in a gallon freezer bag and pound them with something like a meat tenderizer, a soup can.

Your husband’s hammer.

Just kidding on that last part.  Although it would probably work…and damage your cutting board.

Pulse them in the food processor until they become fine crumbs.

You want them to look like sand.

Dump in 1/3 cup of sugar.

Next, take a stick of butter and melt it in the microwave for about 45 seconds.

Your microwave might be a different strength, but mine usually takes 45 seconds.

Pour it right into the food processor with your graham cracker crumbs and sugar.

Put the lid on and whiz this all up until it now looks like wet sand.

Sometimes just for fun I add in a dash of cinnamon (about 1/2 teaspoon) and nutmeg (1/4 teaspoon).

Whiz it again to mix in.

Now, here is an interesting fact. I may be the only person in the world who didn’t know this until my friend Melisa showed me.

There is a hole in the bottom side of your food processor bowl. I’ve always just assumed it was for the attachments to fit in.

You can actually stick one finger in this to keep the blade from falling out when you turn it upside down to dump or scrape something out of your bowl.  I know, I know, the amazing things you learn here on Dishin and Dishes right?

Scrape all of this out into your pie dish.

Then take a large spoon and press it up and around the sides of the dish.

It’s up to you what thickness you prefer…this makes a pretty thick crust so if you want a thinner crust, just use part of it and save the rest for something else in the freezer.  This would make 2 pie crusts for smaller low dish pie pans.

And there ya have it…graham cracker crust!  Make your own! It’s so much better than those store bought ones!
