The 2013 State Fair Food Finds and Ratings
This past Saturday we visited the Oklahoma State Fair with our good friends Joy and Dale.
Dales very favorite thing to do is the fair, so we spent almost eight hours going through every single building, and sampling A LOT of food between the four of us.
Yes folks, it was MAJOR cheat day on healthy eating.
Here are a few of the foods we tasted and I snapped photos of with my iPhone. Cuz, man, I was NOT lugging my DSLR camera around for 8 Hours at the fair!
The winner BY FAR of all four of us was this…Corn Flake Chicken on a Stick.
This has a sweet breading with a hefty and satisfactory crunch factor but the white meat chicken breast inside is SO juicy and savory. Yep, we all united in chorus in saying this was our very favorite thing.
Lets just move on to what I would say was one of my most anticipated tries of the day…and also the MOST disappointing.
I had envisioned melt-in-your-mouth slices of bacon with its salty goodness paired with a rich creamy sweet chocolate. Instead, I felt like I may have to visit the dentist afterward for the bacon had been deep fried and almost burnt and was rock hard, leaving almost no flavor to it. Blah. Thumbs down, wasted money and I wanted to throw all $6 of it away. Had they made bacon the way we do at home (click here to see how), it would have been much better!
I am not a huge fried food person, so I sought out these…Bacon Wrapped Gouda Stuffed Mushrooms.
If you like mushrooms, you will love this. They are skewered bottom to bottom, stuffed with Gouda cheese stuffed in between, then wrapped in bacon and grilled on the stick.
And the bonus? They come atop a paper boat filled with pita chips and hummus. The downside? The price tag flipped me out a bit coming in at $13.50!
Next up was the thing I always seek out and find at the state fair. The roasted corn.
Regular fairgoers will know and love this. Stacked grill racks of grilled, in-husk sweet corn smoke over an open grill charring the kernels just a bit. And to make it even better, they peel the husks back and submerse them in a giant vat of melted butter. Out on the counter are Parmesan cheese, chili powder, cayenne pepper, salt and-pepper, and hot sauce for your added pleasure. It’s my all-time favorite fair food that I look forward to.
New to me this year…joy ordered Bacon Cheese Bombs.
I think in trying to describe them, I would say they are like fried savory little doughnuts with cheese and bacon? I had a bite of Joy’s.
Not pictured, but other items we tried, gyros, Chocolate Soufflé from Coco Flow. Delicious.
