Nikkellette’s Cafe (And Raspberries N Creme)
Head down May Avenue Monday through Saturday from 11 to 2:30 and you may see a see of cars parked outside of this little cafe.
Located behind, and associated with Raspberries N Creme Bakery & Catering, this quaint and fun lunch spot is a big hit with the ladies of Oklahoma City. (Pssst, hey guys?!! You should risk the bit of foo-foo to go eat here, you don’t know what you’re missing!)
The bakery is located out on May Avenue and you’ll see it right away. But venture on back through the parking lot, and you’ll see Nikkellette’s Cafe.
Saunter past the charming outdoor patio, which was noteably vacant due to the extreme heat wave we’ve been under and head inside.
The inside was surprisingly adorable to me. I loved the eclectic mix of the shabby chic chandeliers and brightly tiled walls.
Sitting nea the back and waiting for me under one of them was Tori! I knew it was going to be super cute inside because, well, she had texted me “Mom, it’s SUPER cute in here!”
There are little touches of fun all around the restaurants, including a tiny wrought iron child tea table!
And the food I was passing by on my way to our table looked pretty good so I was eager to see the menu.
We decided to start out with an appetizer of Crab Dip.
Buttery lettuce bowls cupped a generous portion of crab dip made, mostly, with cream cheese , a little crab with a smattering of tomatoes and red onion over top. I would have liked more crab and less cream cheese, but we enjoyed it all the same by scooping it up with the tortilla chips brought in a separate bowl.
Tori decided to order the Smoked Turkey Delight sandwich.
It came surrounded by a solossal sized pickle and some homemade potato chips.
This sandwich consisted of smoked turkey, cream cheese, avocado, lettuce, tomatoes and mayonnaise on a grilled whole wheat bun. It was really good and she was a happy camper.
I was torn as I’d heard they have this crazy salad called Everything But the Kitchen Sink, with seasoned beef, grilled chicken, romaine, spring mix, toasted almonds, pumpkin seeds, cucumbers, pico de gallo, cheddar AND blue cheese, homemade hard boiled eggs, raspberry chipotle and ranch dressings. I really wanted to try this salad, but then I saw that they had fish tacos, and I’m always a sucker for fish tacos.
I opted for the fish tacos. These came out with seasoned grilled fish, cabbage, onions, peppers, tomatoes, with a small offering of black bean salsa & chips with raspberry chipolta and senora sauce for dipping. At least that’s what they menu said, but really I think it was good old fashioned sour cream?
I enjoyed these and, I really coveted the plates themselves. I loved them.
Our waitress came out to ask us if we wanted dessert. I knew what I wanted. Ribbon cake. It had to be ribbon cake.
The Ribbon Cake.
If you’ve lived in Oklahoma City for any amount of time, you’re bound to come across the Raspberries N Creme Ribbon Cake at a special occasion like a shower or a special birthday. They come with a ribbon each of chocolate cake, yellow cake and custard filling, and are frosted with fresh sweet whipped cream and topped with fresh flowers.
At Nikkellette’s, you can get this topped with strawberries or raspberries, or both. While not a huge fan of cakes, I do like the moistness and freshness of the ribbon cake…a lot.
Tori got the chocolate pie.
Light and mousse-like this dessert was chocolate goodness.
Afterwards, we walked across the parking lot and through the Raspberries and Creme bakery and gift shop.
We enjoyed our girly lunch at Nikkellette’s Cafe. We’ll be going back.
I have to try that salad.
