HunnyBunny Biscuit Co.
My new favorite hashtag is #AllHotNButtered.
If I got a tattoo, this is what I’d put on my ankle, arm or …
OK let’s face it, my kids have been trying to talk me into a tattoo for years and I’m just plain not getting one. Choosing pain and a picture that will obviously grow larger over the years has never been my cup of tea.
However, I can get on board with any item off the menu of HunnyBunny Biscuit Co., which just happens to sit in the looming shadow of the Tower Theatre at 429 NW 23rd Street in the Uptown 23rd District of Oklahoma City. However, it is not overshadowed at all, even if its tiny inconspicuous sign seems dwarfed in comparison. Who needs a grand sign anyway when your food is super solid? HunnyBunny holds its own, I promise you.
Its owners Urban Management Group (and executive chef Chris McKenna) who also brought you hits like Packards and Interurban have a hopping good thing going on (sorry, I had to do it) as is witnessed by the lines going out the door and on the street on any given Saturday.
Outside its bright and sunny with its picnic tabled patio of salmon and turquoise, even in spite of the rain literally pouring down that day.
Not to be outdone, the inside is light, airy and full of cheer and sparkle.
I met Joy for breakfast one weekday morning and we tried out a couple of their twelve Biscuit Sandwich creations.
People this is biscuit heaven!
The menu offers everything from fried chicken paired with collard greens, hot sauce and a fried egg (the Charleston), to hot links paired with jalapeno cream cheese and caramelized onions (the No. 7) to a veggie offering of eggs, spinach, mushrooms, red peppers and onions with goat cheese (the Veggie Scramble).
Joy decided to keep it classic and ordered the Basic Chick.
If you’re going to feature fried chicken on five of your 12 Sandwiches, you better have a darn good recipe and HunnyBunny doesn’t disappoint. The chicken was seasoned beautifully and had a perfect amount of crisp to the crust. Warm oozing honey took this basic over to the top to deliciousness.
On that note, I should say, the biscuits at HunnyBunny are done exceedingly well. A good biscuit differs for each person’s preference, but you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who disliked these. Steaming -tender and flaky inside with again, just the right amount of crispy outside, they would be a star all by themselves.
I ordered the Croque Madame.
Hang on…I can give you a better visual than that.
There we go. Yes there is a biscuit hiding under that glorious pool of mornay sauce along with ham and Gruyere cheese and a perfectly fried egg.
God bless egg yolks.
Oh, and I can’t forget…tater tots, although I think they were your typical out-of-the bag tots.
Now mind you, I was absolutely stuffed at this point. But there are dessert biscuits.
As in, the Strawberry Shortcake Biscuit.
Heaven help me but this was stupendously good. And pretty? I was totally loving the whipped cream roses on top and just look at the deep red of those strawberries and juice!
There’s also a Cinnamon Roll Biscuit that’s calling my name next time.
Other offerings include a “Lil Bunnies” kid menu. and the Biscuit Bonanza section of the menu, offering up everything from Chicken Pot Pie topped with a biscuit to the Biscuit French Toast, a biscuit dipped and grilled like french toast, and topped with fresh berries, whipped cream, candied pecans and real (YES!) maple syrup.
HunnyBunny also serves local full-service coffee (with local roasters Eôté Coffee Company and KLLR Coffee), bloody marys and mimosas.
Check out HunnyBunny Biscuit Co. sometime for breakfast or lunch. (They’re only open from 7 am to 3 pm.)
You’ll most certainly be glad you did.
