How to Tell if an Avocado is Ripe

March 14, 2010Katie

I totally can’t take credit for this one.  My friend Dessi showed me this yesterday when we visited the Latino market.

How do you check an avocado for ripeness?

Are you like me and squeeze the sides of it?

STOP IT!

Dessi said that makes them mushy after so many people do it.  Here is what she said to do…

Take your avocado.

An avocado is like an egg.  There is a pointier end and a rounder, bigger end.  We want the bigger end.

Kind of like my bottom is going to be be if I keep making the food Dessi keeps suggesting.

Gently apply pressure with your thumb to this end.  If there is a little give, the avocado is ripe and good.

Now, keep in mind, you have to use common sense.  If the sides cave in with your fingers, you don’t want the thing! It’s bad!

But so far, of the three I picked out with her, this has definately been true.  Try it!

Great information, Katie! Is it true, if the avocado needs to ripen a little more, you can place it in a paper bag and leave on the kitchen counter (rather than refrigerate)? I figure your friend will know. Have a great week!

This is the best tip ever! This is the first time I have ever picked out avocados and had them all turn out perfectly! Thanks so much!
