Homemade Chickpea Flour
Fifteen years ago, the word vegan or “plant-based” food (or myself posting a recipe called Homemade Chickpea Flour) was barely heard of and only thought to be used by children raised by hippies or people a little “different”… but today, this thought concept is widely being switched to, or at least being used somewhat by many health conscious folk. Those who are gluten free or eating plant based diets are widely using chickpea flour and this is a much simpler and cheaper way to get it!
Enter my son Conner. (And my precious grand-dogger Stoney).
Conner has gone completely vegan and been running marathons like a crazy man which has completely inspired me. He suggested we watch a Netflix documentary called Game Changers, about how many athletes have risen to the top of their game by switching to plant-based eating like this recipe for my delicious Kale Quinoa Black Bean Salad. It was inspiring to watch. It also informed us of a lot of scientific proof about plant based eating…which we kind of already had experienced by doing our yearly Daniel Fast in January.
We simply felt better…and had more energy.
Last February Conner ran in the half marathon through the rocky terrain of Robber’s Cave State Park which he said was “by far the hardest course in Oklahoma”. In his first bout of running competitively. he came in THIRD. I was SO proud. Also his regimen got me thinking.
I am being completely transparent with you when I say both Mr. Wonderful and I are on cholesterol medicine…both our families have a history of this…and we wish to deviate from that path…thus we have been eating a lot of plant based recipes of late and the term “meatless” has been more and more our norm.
As a vegetable, chickpeas are nutritious. They have a high protein and fiber content and are known to help lower cholesterol, which makes them a good choice for those wishing to replace all kinds of meat in their diet. Also they are known to be healthy for everything from skin to internal organs.
White-processed flour or even wheat flour, has of late, also been to known to cause all kinds of problems…including gluten intolerance and actually not providing much in lines of helping a healthy diet. Therefore, alternate flours have been offered like almond flour, coconut flour and yes….chickpea flour.
No need to pay those exorbitant prices however, you can easily make it with one ingredient at home and a blender or food processor.
Just throw dried chickpeas into a blender or food processor. I am using my Vitamix….which definitely yielded better results than my Cuisinart food processor.
Process these for 2-3 minutes.
Stop and scrape down the sides of the processor so everything is blended evenly.
When it’s “flour”, it will be powdery and coat your spatula like flour dust.
And that’s it!

- 2 c. dried chickpeas
- Place dried chickpeas in a high powdered blender or food processor.
- Process for 2-4 minutes, scraping down the sides of the machine as needed.
- If necessary, sift flour through a sifter afterward to break down any larger pieces of chickpeas that did not proces4s.
