During our Tulsa tasting weekend, Mr. Wonderful and I tried this place – The Sushi Place.
On an otherwise drab and colorless downtown street with a view of the BOK Center, a burgundy awning draws one’s eye to beckon you inside…
This is our kind of sushi place. It may not be expensively decorated, but the sushi is solidly good and the staff is friendly. Owners Joey Leong and Jayme Tan opened The Sushi Place in May of 2011 and they’ve built up a nice little gem and a fan base as well.
We’ve found in the past, that the trendy sushi places where the yuppies hang out at are not always the best sushi offerings. Our favorite Oklahoma City place doesn’t look like much from the outside, needs new interior decor, but we love the sushi there…The Sushi Place might be small, but it is quaint and the sushi is good. No more needs to be said right?
Inside is clean and small with black table cloths and cloth napkins. The wall art is by local artists.
There is a small sushi bar you can sit at to watch your rolls made by Joey…who remained behind the counter making us some wonderful stuff.
Joey didn’t want me to take pictures of her but I managed to sneak one in. See Joey? It’s not that bad…and I focused on the sushi so you’re a bit blurred. Jayme was a bit more protective and I have yet to get a snapshot of her. But she was a welcome dinner guest while we feasted on the offerings to come.
Jayme sat with us and told us the story of their place. She told me of its humble beginnings and how they didn’t have much furniture. She told me how they refuse to charge artist,s like some local places do, to display their paintings so they could give them some publicity…and …
She told us a lot about sushi and their food, and all the while her eyes twinkled with the passion of her place.
We started out with miso and Jayme assures us hers was not made with a mix.
The dashi broth was made in house and we could taste it.
Then, we moved on to two salads – the Wakame (Seaweed Salad) and the Ika Salad (Calamari Salad).
If you haven’t tried either of these salads at a sushi place, I urge you to try them! I love the crunchy seaweed salad with its bright green strands and undertones of rice wine vinegar, soy sauce and sesame oil and the health benefits, including many vitamins and minerals is an added bonus! The Sushi Place’s version was wonderful, bright and fresh.
The Ika Salad is delicious as well if you’re okay with the rubbery feel of calamari mixed with a similar dressing. I happened to love it.
The Sushi Place has a selection of sake as well as Japanese and American beer to compliment your sushi as well.
Now let’s talk about the important stuff…the sushi.
Two of my girls went with us to this place and they swooned over the sushi on the right.
That was the Cheesy Maki Roll. Inside it had smoked salmon, jalapeno and cream cheese. Oh yes, the whole thing was tempura breaded and deep fried and on top of the roll was baked shrimp in a yummy cheese sauce similar to alfredo, but also (almost hidden) under that was sweet sauce and spicy mayonnaise. If you are not a raw fish sushi fan or even a picky sushi fan, you would love this!
The other roll we tried was their famous 918 roll in honor of the 918 Tulsa area code. (in the above picture on the left side). I think this is probably their most popular roll and features shrimp tempura, crabstick, avocado, and it’s topped with tempura flakes and sweet sauce.
These rolls were both delicious and make me slightly ravenous just now thinking about them, but I tend to prefer a cleaner and healthier sushi myself. In fact, one of the reasons I adore sushi is that it satisfies but doesn’t leave you with that uncomfortable feeling that fried heavy foods do. So i wanted to try some of their spicy tuna alone…
It came out like it should, cold, brilliantly red, remarkably fresh and with a kick. It was wonderful.
If you’re around Tulsa for lunch or dinner, try The Sushi Place sometime. Check out their Facebook page for some special they offer like free edamame or 1/2 price appetizers.
Say hi to Joey and Jayme for me…they’re some of the nicest folks you’ll ever meet!
