The Amazing Squirrel Rescue

Behind this fence lies my garden.  Mr W put a sweet little picket fence and gate across the yard on the side of the house in the backyard so I could have my garden protected from our mutts.

It’s behind this fence.

So yesterday on his day off, he was cutting down some trees that had grown up between our stockade-style fence and the neighbors chain link fence, as they were shading my garden.  When I got home…this was what I saw in my driveway.

You actually couldn’t even see the driveway due to the monstrous branches covering it.

So, earlier, he had called and told me that one of the trees he’d cut down had a squirrel nest in it, complete with babies.  He didn’t know this when he cut it down, and when it toppled over, 3 baby squirrels ran out of it.  They were all okay to begin with, and while he was furiously running around chasing them with a gloved hand, he hadn’t counted on this.

Our sweet PK Kitty, who apparently thought they were giant mice, darted into the back yard and snatched one of them up.  Much to Mr. W’s distress, she ran off down the road with one.  He chased her but to no avail.

Now I have to go back to the boardroom to try and get him to “like” cats again…cuz all my hard works gone to snuff.  He’ll now only think of her as a baby squirrel stalker.

When I asked, “What did you do with the other babies?”, he led me into the backyard and showed me something.

A rigged up cage he’d made with our firepit.  The momma was on top of it when we first arrived but she scurried off.  Mr. W told me he was going to take off the lid and see if she would rescue them but when I screamed “LET ME GET MY CAMERA FIRST!” and took off running back into the house, he waited a bit.

While I was gone, he scooped up the Maxinator so he didn’t get any ideas…I think he was a little scared of household pets and their darker side after what PK had done.

I returned, so he pulled off the lid.  I was waiting for the momma squirrel to come flying out of the trees and attack him, but it didn’t happen.

And there they were..the two littlest squirrels I’ve ever seen.

They were clinging for their life on the grate of the firepit.

Mr. W went back to trimming trees in the front yard, but I couldn’t leave those little babies alone.  I had to watch what they were doing.  I gave him strict instructions to “watch out for that cat!!” as he left.

Pretty soon, they started moving around.  I was fascinated by their webbed looking large feet.

And one finally got over the top and scurried down to the ground..

But then I think he missed his sister, cuz he came right back up again to check on her.

“Hey, YO SIS! Get up here would ya?”

So Sis climbed right on up as well.

“Ok I’m here…I’m here! Lemme outa here! “

“Ummm, hey Bro?  Weren’t we just doing this a minute ago except facing the other way? Is this all you could come up with?”

” Mommmmmmmm!”

Enter Mom.

After scolding them for not being very bright, Mom knew exactly what to do.  She flipped the baby upside down in her grasp.

And took off with it over towards the fence!  She paused for a moment at the fence, and I worried she wouldn’t be able to get up it with the baby in her arms.

But then, with a shake of her tail, she scampered right up the fence.

She hollered, “Hold on tightly Trixie!” to her daughter (Okay I made that part up).

I speak no squirrel.

And then she scampered up and over a tree onto my neighbors’ rooftop and then disappeared over the peak.

I hung around watching lil Bro for awhile, wondering if Mom would come back for him.

Lil Bro got himself in the darndest positions.  I was afraid he was gonna squash himself before his mama came back.

I hung around for awhile waiting, but then I had to go use the little girl’s room..and when I came back to check on the numbskull little sweetheart, he was gone.

Mr W said that the mom had whisked him away. He’d seen her from the front yard.

And that my friends, was the Amazing Squirrel Rescue…who says urban life is all bad?

You should ALWAYS capture baby squirrels with the specific intent of photographing their rescue. This was awesome! I giggled when she flipped the baby upside down. So cute!

P.S. Did the remaining squirrel have a sex change operation between "Hold on, Trixie" and the time mom came back or did I misread that?

Beth - Trixie was the one mom was taking with her! Hmm that might be a little confusing!

The mommy squirrel carrying her baby is one of the cutest things ever. We have some squirrels living in a tree out our back door and I love to watch them.
