Mr. Wonderful and I just came off a crazy weekend of visiting Tulsa restaurants.  We ate at so many wonderful restaurants and met SO many wonderful people.  I came back with hundreds of pictures and tastes left in my memory.  Where to start? How about if I just go in the order we ate at them? There really is no other way to organize that culinary field trip we took from sun up to sun down.

So for our first visit…early Saturday morning…we visited….

Queenie’s Plus.

I have to tell you…based on the name, I thought we’d be visiting a breakfast diner in a so-so area of town.  So when I saw the addresss..Utica Square…I knew something about my perception didn’t fit.

We noticed a buzz of people already walking around or sitting on the bright pink and orange chairs outside on the patio. Utica Square is an upscale shopping center that is just a great place to walk around outside and shop at.

Queenie’s has a show stopper when you walk in the door.  Namely this huge glass counter full of pastries, cookies and cakes that make you just want to crawl inside of it and camp out for a long while.

It was so long in fact, that I had to snap more than one picture to get all the delicious sweet treats to fit!

See those multi-layered cakes on the bottom row and the top row (uncovered)? Those are Queenie’s well known Strawberry Cream Cakes.  Queenie’s uses local grass fed chicken and eggs as well as natural local beef at their little cafe and all the baked goods are trucked over a few times a day from their own bakery just across the street in the basement of a large building.  Queenie’s serves locally roasted coffee from Topeka Coffee as well.

We hadn’t eaten breakfast yet but it was almost lunchtime so we were torn over what to get as Queenie’s serves up breakfast, lunch and dinner.

We settled on a fresh squeezed orange juice and one of their gourmet Famous Grilled Cheese Sandwiches.  We ordered the Cheese Dream that came with fresh fruit.  It was spread with cream cheese and …gulp…bacon.  Also layered on was avocado and lettuce and tomato.

As you can see, it was so good I forgot to take a picture until there was but one bite left. On Queenie’s homemade bread, I just loved it.

Inside the restaurant is a very small seating area where you can just sit in torture and look at all those sweets in that glass case.

Ruth Young opened this little gem over 25 years ago and from what I’ve heard, not much has changed on the menu.  We were fortunate enough to meet her before we left, and she insisted on sending us out some goodies to take with us.

Later that night, after trying 10 more places, we broke open this container and I popped a bite of that lemon bar in my mouth.  It might have been the most delectable lemon bar I’ve had in my life. Sweet but tart and silky smooth with a crunch crust, it was absolutely sinful!

There are several things on Queenie’s menu I’d love to go try again like the Ultra Egg Salad with bacon and tomato or their famed Chicken Salad Sandwich.

And I can’t go back enough times to try their desserts.  Next time I’m getting a Sour Cream Lime Tart to go.
