Mr. Wonderful and I found ourselves without kids yesterday after church. The thought of cooking didn’t thrill me, so we decided to venture out and try the newly opened Nhinja Sushi & Wok restaurant at May and Memorial (On May North of Memorial).
Nhinja is the brilliant creation of owners Kang and Mary Nhin. Is is a fast- food sushi concept but doesn’t taste at all like fast food. The sushi is decent, the wok creations very tasty, and there are plenty of healthy options, including, can you believe this…the option to have brown rice in your sushi or any dish!
I love this…because I know bad carbohydrates are not lower body friendly with my metabolism. Here’s a shot of the menu.
I love the atmosphere in Nhinja as well. It’s brilliant white with punches of bright colors, hip pictures and decor.
There are nice touches that make you feel like a full service place…like white booths with retro chairs…and art on the wall of the owner’s kiddos.
Nice touches like little Hors d’œuvre plates on the chic condiment and drink bar. side note – I have these same plates at home and love them!
So to begin, instead of sitting down and ordering, you order at the counter where there is a large menu on the wall or paper print-outs for you to browsed through.
There is also a neat collection of drinks besides soda fountain drinks you can order from trendy oriental bottled drinks for kids to wine to individual sake bottles to hot tea.
The staff was very friendly and helpful at the counter, even though they look really serious in this picture.
After placing your order, you’ll be given a number stand to take to your table. The tables are very clean and very white.
We both started our meal out with a bowl of the Miso soup.
If you haven’t had Miso soup before, it is a traditional Japanese soup consisting of dashi mixed with miso paste. It’s usually a rich and satisfying broth and general comes with some tiny squares of firm tofu and maybe a sprinkling of green onions or seaweed. Incidentally, miso is very good for you if it doesn’t contain MSG.
We both agreed Nhinja’s was pretty good and sipped it up quickly.
Mr. Wonderful went for a couple of sushi rolls.
I only took one little taste because I’m not eating a lot of bad carbs, but he was really pleased with his sushi.
I was very happy to see they had an Ahi Tuna salad on the menu.
My tuna was crusted in black sesame seeds, lightly seared and then fanned out on a bed of spring mix salad with some diced cucumbers. The dressing was a spicy ponzu sauce (Ponzu is the Japanese equivalent of a citrus based vinaigrette and usually contains soy sauce as well.)
This salad worked perfectly with my low carb diet right now and I didn’t feel I was lacking in anything! Delicious!
Once the workers spied me with my camera, I gave them my card and they insisted in sending out this loveliness.
The Chicken and Broccoli wok was really good for a fast food type of setting – the chicken was all white meat and was generously served along with a huge scoop of brown rice. Mr. W is pretty picky and he really liked this place.
It’s family friendly but you can still get grownup items as well…
IF you’re looking for a fancy schmancy sushi place, this may not be your cup of tea. But if you’re looking for some above average and healthy fast food in a nice atmosphere, you’ll be stopping into Nhinja pretty often.
