If you’ve never been to Chicago and had pizza there, I can just tell you, it’s a wonderful experience. Once you’ve had it, you dream about it. Plain ol’ regular pizza just won’t do.
My very good friend Joy, and often partner in foodie crime, also loves Chicago pizza, and we had both heard good things about a pizza joint out in Edmond that helps those poor folk like us who love Chicago pizza out with this problem. Apparently, New York folk need help with their problem as well, so this restaurant splits itself down the middle, (literally) to please us all.
So one Friday night, Joy and her husband Dale, and Mr. Wonderful and I ventured off to the world of Humble Pie.
First off, you’re going to have to pay close attention to the strip mall located on the West side of Broadway Extension. Look for the bright green and yellow sign just North of 15th Street. That’s the place.
As you head into the eatery, you’re going to also wonder about the fringe of dollar bills hanging off every square inch of the ceiling.
Add in your dollar to the lot and it will go towards a great cause, that of O.A.T.H. (Oklahomans Against Trafficking of Humans). And you’ll notice something else. The left wall showcases Chicago, and the right wall highlights city scapes of New York City.
There is an imaginary line drawn down the center of the room so pick your pleasure and have a seat.
We chose Chicago, of course, although I don’t know why I didn’t take a picture of it.
We placed our orders, and while we waited we snacked on the Bottomless Pretzel Basket.
I make something similar to these at home, and they are highly addictive, but theirs came with a side of ranch to dip them in…even more addictive!
Owners Matthew and Joyanne Heard are like the rest of us hopeless lovers of Chicago pies, having lived there once himself, Matthew set about to make the perfect crust and through many thrown away batches, finally hit on it here at Humble Pie. The crust is somewhere between pizza crust and pie crust with it’s buttery richness and we saw Joyanne shoveling them in and out of their brick oven the entire time we were there.
Apparently we’re not the only ones who think Humble Pie is a treat. When we were there, Matt made me promise not to write about them for a few weeks, as he was heading to Las Vegas that week and shutting down the eatery to go compete in the International Pizza Competition where they snagged 2nd place in the Pan Competition. That means we have some good pretty good pizza right here in Oklahoma City folks!
The crust is fabulous, deep and filled with all kinds of deliciousness. I chose the Mushroom Madness for my half of Mr. W’s and my pizza. Filled with a five cheese blend of alfredo sauce and a trio of mushrooms, this was absolute heaven for me.
Mr. W wanted something more manly, and ordered his half of the pizza The Samoan, which was a ridiculous blend of red sauce, five cheese, smoked applewood bacon, Canadian bacon and pineapple.
Joy wanted a Margherita pizza, but after being cautioned that it wouldn’t work well with the deep dish, they improvised and made her something similar which made her very happy.

The eatery is also a fun atmosphere, not fancy, but just bustling and quirky.
There is pizza box decor to be had.
And back by the bathrooms, some artfully decorated dollar bills have been showcased.
There are pictures of folks with their Humble Pie boxes from all over the world.
