DIY Coffee Table Remake
It always amazes me the thing that people throw away.
We picked this coffee table up at a local thrift store. The stained color was just…a little too orange for our taste or our furniture. We have a lot of chocolate brown in our living room and it just didn’t seem to work. However, it was a good solid and heavy piece of furniture and we knew it would clean up nicely.
There were some wrought iron vintage looking leafy inserts in those rectangular holes you see around the sides. Mr. Wonderful removed them and then got out his sander and got working on it.
We were going for a look I’d seen on a DIY on Pinterest and loved. It looked like this.
Finally he got the entire top stripped down to bare wood. And he roughed up the legs.
Then he sprayed the legs with an antique white paint and stained the top with mahogany stain
Someday I want a true hardwood floor stained in mahogany. It is gorgeous. Then Mr. W got a can of clear polyurethane and put on the first coat.
Then we decided to look at the can to see how long we were supposed to wait in between coats – three hours?
Well, hopefully one and a half will work.
On went the second coat of polyurethane. At this point, Mr. W was smiling and singing “O Happy Day” cuz you know the smell of varnish will do strange things to your mind.
After letting it dry the remainder of the day, he decided to put the leafy scrolly wrought iron thingies back on. And they matched beautifully and then he carried it into the living room.
After we got Mr. Wonderful detoxed from the fumes…we sat and looked at it.
And we just love it.
The things people throw away.
