One thing I never learned in my early years is to take advantage of all the nice days that occur here on and off through the winter months to prepare for next year’s garden. One thing we really wanted was to convert our big back garden into two more raised beds. After the two we used last year, it wasn’t long before we wanted to convert to just using raised beds. Continue ReadingI woke this morning and stretched lazily. For some reason I really had a hard time opening my eyes. As my senses came into focus, I realized why. The soft patter of rain on the skylight in our room kept wanting to lull me back to sleep. Last week we visited my parents and brother in Michigan for the first part of the week and then drove over to Chicago to see my son’s Navy graduation from basic training. More about that later. When we returned home we were shocked to see how much our little garden had grown from the vast amounts of rain we received while we were off traveling. And now…more rain! We desperately need it to restore our lakes back to good…

Continue ReadingWelcome again to unpredictable Oklahoma weather. Two weekends ago, Mr. Wonderful and I spent all Saturday in the yard. He made a pretty need DIY composter for us. The trash can has a hole cut in the lid and bottom and a cut off old broomstick is stuck through it and into the side posts to where it twirls, thus solving the problem of “turning” the compost. He also drilled about fifty 1/4 inch holes around the trash can for ventilation. The hinged door, he cut and mounted the hinges and fastener by screwing them into a small piece of wood inside. Continue ReadingAnd so it begins…. It’s time for planting! Last weekend, I spent some time planting some (mostly) cool weather plants in the greenhouse. It caused me to reflect on what I’ve learned this year. #1 I didn’t plant early enough last year. Since we put the greenhouse in in April, I didn’t get my cool weather plants planted early enough. Thus my peas never produced and my Nasturtiums were sickly from the heat in June, and my tomatoes ending producing LOADS of large pretty green tomatoes right when…yes, you guessed it..the first frost hit. Continue ReadingThis weekend left me utterly confused gardening friends. I woke up Saturday morning at 6:45 and stepped outside to walk down the stone path with my little doggies Bubba and Max. Brrrrr!!! I had to go back inside and get on a sweatshirt as a mere t-shirt wouldn’t suffice. By noon on Saturday, the thermometer inside my greenhouse read 115°. I was utterly confused. I knew I needed to move pronto to get my spring plants like radishes, lettuce and kale out of the greenhouse and into the garden.
