I’ve been to Maggie’s Cafe quite a few times. They have quite an extensive breakfast and lunch menu, and everything I’ve had has been largely portioned, and fabulous. I will just tell you that almost everything in this cozy little diner-type cafe is homemade and purchased locally, if she can get it.
Maggie Bujnowski, the owner and namesake of the Cafe, lived in Poland until 1989, when she came to the States and we, my friends, are the lucky recipients of her move.
I could wax poetic for hours about her American food, which is fabulous, but since my goal is to get all of you chain restaurant eaters out of your box and make you try new and exciting ethnic foods, I’m going to tell you about the Polish section of her menu.
I’ve tried several items on the Polish menu now, but my favorite of all time are the Polish Crepes, also called Krokiety.
I think it’s my favorite because it tastes very similar to German Bierocks. What’s a Bierock? Click here to see my family recipe.
However, Krokiety are a little different than Beirocks. They are homemade crepes filled with beef, spices, mushrooms and sauerkraut. The crepes are folded into large squares over the filling, then Maggie dips the whole bundle into egg and rolls it in bread crumbs. And then, they are fried…
And I’m pretty sure it’s in butter.
And you get two of them, and they’re a good size – all for $6.99 ! And oh my gosh are they good! Oh yes, and see those onion rings on the side?
They have just replaced a certain burger joint as being my favorite onion rings in Oklahoma City.
That was Mr. Wonderful’s meal. I had already tried the Crepes, so I decided to try the Cabbage Rolls ($6.99) this visit.
These are tender cabbage rolls, filled with beef, rice, seasonings and smothered in Maggie’s (once again) homemade tomato sauce. These were filling but alas, they came with two side orders, so I chose the Homemade Sauerkraut, and the Polish Potato Salad.
Both were delicious – the sauerkraut included shredded carrots mixed into it, and you are given the choice of having it served warm or cold (I chose warm). And the potato salad is really good if you like the creamy version. It was diced very small and had carrots, peas, and their secret ingredient – very finely chopped apples. I really enjoyed it.
Other things I’ve ordered at Maggie’s are their Pierogis ($6.99). I took this last visit with my phone- and it’s not a great shot.
These are dumplings wrapped around mashed potatoes and cheese, then pan-fried until crisp and yummy. But that’s not enough. They are then topped with chopped, grilled onions and …gulp…real bacon chunks.
Okay, I never said Polish food was diet did I?
There are 2-3 more pages of Maggie’s menu I could go into, but you know, you just need to go try it out for yourself.
But before you leave?
Ask about her daily cakes ($4.99/slice).
For your $4.99, you get a slice of a 4-layer cake (each layer is a full cake pan), and each slice is 1/8 of the cake. Maggie loves to play with recipes daily on these, and today’s version was Cookies N Creme. The one we missed out on had pineapple inside and coconut on the outside. Mr. Wonderful and I shared our slice and could only eat half. We ate the other half in the car last night on the ride to church with 2 plastic spoons.
It was a bad day for eating healthy. But it was a good day for Polish food.
Check out Maggie’s Cafe for lunch one day…or even breakfast.
And venture into the Polish menu!
